The rich patinas of much smoked old carved wooden pipes really do it for me, but even more so the face carved into this one, feeling as if having pushed itself to the surface, completely of it. A bit like a face on the moon. Really beautiful, subtle and very wise feeling, and the form of this pipe itself is really gorgeous too. A couple of splits in the wood here from age/shrinkage, as evident, and with a piece of tin lining the bowl. I would guess Civil War era but don't know for certain. 

3 1/4" l x 2 3/4" t x 1 1/2" d at bowl. Two splits as evident and documented but stable and sound with a super rich patina.
