Glycine, or aminoacetic acid,  is the simplest of all protein amino acids. It is the only one that occurs in only one spatial configuration and has no optical activity. Therefore, the name of glycine exceptionally does not contain the prefix L-, as in the case of other amino acids. It is also one of the most abundant amino acids in the human body, constituting an important structural element of proteins. It is estimated that it constitutes on average approximately 7% of amino acid residues in proteins. At the same time, glycine also constitutes over 30% of the amino acids contained in collagen and is one of the fundamental ingredients involved in the synthesis of this important protein.

Glycine is an endogenous amino acid, which means that the body can synthesize it on its own. This takes place mainly by synthesis from choline and also as a result of the transformation of other amino acids, such as serine or alanine. As in the case of other endogenous amino acids, the synthesis of glycine may be limited by various unfavorable factors, such as disease states that disturb its synthesis or an unbalanced, protein-poor diet.
