Tinctures or extracts are liquid preparations produced by adding herbs to a menstrum. A menstrum is the liquid base for the preparation and may be one of several different mediums including water, vinegar, glycerine and alcohol. The purpose of the menstrum is to extract the medicinal constituents of the herb, including but not limited to resins, oils, and flavanoids (which themselves help the body to absorb the active components of the herb). A tincture preserves the plants' constituents at the peak of potency, especially when using fresh herbs. Alcohol is the most active of the menstrums, and has the ability to extract a wide range of medicinal elements while acting as an excellent preservative.

Liquid preparations are quickly and easily assimilated into the blood stream, are easy to swallow and convenient to take. Unlike pills or capsules which can deteriorate quickly, tinctures are viable for up to 5 years, and require no refrigeration.
