 In this revised edition a number of sections have been modified or expanded in the light of evidence which has appeared since the first publication of this book, although substantive changes have been few. My own reading during the past seven years would in any case have led to revision, but I am happy to acknowledge that I have learnt a great deal from reviewers of the first edition, notably Peter Erdmann (IRAL, 1984), Jürgen Esser (Anglia, 1985), John Haiman (CJL/RCL, 1986), Roderick A. Jacobs (Language, 1984) and Bent Jacobsen (English Studies, 1986). I am also grateful to those colleagues and friends who have offered comments privately; almost without exception their observations, even when critical, have been positive and helpful. I single out for mention two people, Randolph Quirk and Bertil Sundby, for the extent of their help, and for the blend of learning, insight and gentleness that makes their comments so welcome. And I owe a debt, as in many other things, to Toril, who will trace the lineaments of her advice throughout the book.
